A skipper uses as preparation as a basis for sailing at sea the Reeds and charts. The Reeds contains everything you need to know about currents, tides, coasts, dangers and ports. On a map you can see where you can go and what you can encounter along the way. Also the areas where you should not be.
Basically, you do the same with managing your organization. You collect information and use it as a map, use the knowledge that exists about the situation where you want to be at a certain moment.
That knowledge is not there now. No one knows what our world, your environment, will look like in 3,6,9 or 12 weeks. Let alone in 4.16 or 48 months.
Your ship is already sailing, you have no cards. That is the situation in which skippers found themselves centuries ago.
How did those skippers work?
Initially, sailors sailed only close to the coast and determined their position and course based on striking points on the shore.
In shallow water, it was possible to take soil samples and, by recognizing certain types of soil, sometimes even by tasting the mud, to obtain information about the place. The water depth (in fathom) also provides information.
The course could be determined from the sun and stars.
In the dark and in clouds, only the depth can be determined.
Niet ideaal maar ze kwamen uiteindelijk wel waar ze wilde komen.
